According to Greek mythology, after Zeus created living creatures on Earth, Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus were set the task of giving each animal different natural abilities and gifts: some got wings, others speed, sharp claws, protective shells…
When it was Man’s turn, who should have been superior to all other creatures, Epimetheus had run out of gifts to give. His brother Prometheus then steals fire, which was only for the Gods, thus ensuring Man of his superiority above all other creatures. Zeus punishes Prometheus.
Zeus also punishes newly formed Mankind, by creating the mortal Pandora, sending her to Epimetheus as a bride. A jar containing a secret that can never be revealed was also sent with Pandora. Driven by her insatiable curiosity, Pandora opens the jar. By doing so, she releases all the evils of the world that torment Mankind.
